What to do in Canary Wharf

You might be surprised at just how much is going on in London’s most suited and booted district.

Despite being an iconic feature in the London skyline and the foundation of its business landscape, you won’t find Canary Wharf on too many of the city’s ‘must-visit’ lists… And that’s exactly why we love it. Bustling with smart suits during the workweek, thanks to its low saturation of residential properties, weekends at Canary Wharf are an oasis of calm – which means you get to enjoy its high-brow delights without battling the capital’s usual crowds.

Whether you’re staying for work or life, here are five things to do in Canary Wharf.

Embark on an art treasure hunt

Think of London’s art scene and a whole host of internationally renowned galleries will spring to mind. But did you know Canary Wharf is home to the city’s largest collection of outdoor public art? This little-known collection features over 100 pieces by acclaimed artists such as Henry Moore, Ottotto and Helaine Blumenfeld, including standalone sculptures and integrated architectural works, dotted throughout the central district’s waterlocked streets. Download the Canary Wharf Art Map and take yourself on a self-guided tour of modern artistic talent – starting with Nathaniel Rackowe’s ‘Stack’ a few minutes’ walk away on Bank Street, near Newfoundland Place.

Be a big kid at the funfair

Imagine if funfairs got a grown-up makeover… Enter Fairgame: an adult-only indoor fairground in the heart of Canary Wharf, where all the games you loved as a kid (think Roll-A-Ball Derby, Skeeball, Clown-Shoot) have been brought bang up to date with cutting-edge technology. Plus, you can enjoy some of London’s most mouthwatering street food – including Burger&Beyond, Rudy’s Pizza and Taco Collective – washed down with cocktails and craft beer. Less than a 10-minute walk from Landmark Pinnacle, what else could you possibly need from a night out?

Discover a lush, sky-high haven

Up above the grey and metal, the Crossrail Place Roof Garden is one of the biggest in London – and only a 15-minute stroll from Landmark Pinnacle. Sitting on the Meridian Line, the Garden’s lush planting mirrors the east and west hemispheres, with Asian bamboo and Japanese maple sitting alongside ferns and sweet gum from the Americas. Its funky geometric windows offer spectacular views and a 80-seat performance space showcases a programme of music, dance and theatre in summer. Everything is free to visit – why not check out what’s on while you’re in town?

Eat at the city’s finest spots

As London’s chief financial district, Canary Wharf knows a thing or two about hosting well-heeled visitors. Among the district’s best restaurants are BOKAN 37 (4-minute walk), serving cocktails and modern European fare with a side of stunning panoramic views. There’s also Bombay café Dishoom’s ninth outpost dishing up Maharashtrian-influenced small plates (15-minute walk), Caravan offering globally inspired sharing plates and pizzas (9-minute walk), and Uoichi for traditional Japanese food (15-minute walk). Not forgetting Canary Wharf’s very own Hawksmoor, The Lowback, housed in a floating pavilion (13-minute walk)… Feel like having a relaxing evening in your apartment? Order your feast straight to your door, instead.

Treat yourself to that special piece

Looking for that special piece for your wardrobe? With more than 120 stores across five shopping centres and a fraction of the crowds you’ll come up against in the city’s more popular retail destinations like Oxford Street, Canary Wharf has ideal conditions for calm, considered shopping. Discover an array of options from high-end to high-street, along with plenty of tempting cafés and bars for pit stops. Download a mall map to get strategic.
